History

Population 13,474 (2000)

In 1849, a ship, the Linda, proceeded from the San Francisco Bay up the river to Sutter’s Fort. On the ship was a group of men who became known the Linda Company. They brought with them the parts for a small stern wheel steamer, which they assembled and called the Linda. This little steamer was the first powered boat on the Feather and Yuba Rivers. In December the Linda and the Linda Company arrived in Marysville. After a short stay they proceeded up the Yuba River until they came to a rapids and tied up on the bank at the Rose and Kinlock Ranch. The men liked it so much they decided to stay and lay out a town.
