History

Population as of 2007 – 3,572. An unincorporated area, located 14 miles south of Marysville, Highway 65 in Yuba County, CA.

Wheatland is built upon the Johnson Ranch, purchased by William Johnson in 1845. Johnson’s Ranch was the first settlement reached by the survivors of the ill fated Donner Party. Wheatland was often referred to as the “Four Corners” because of the close junction of Yuba, Sutter, Placer and Nevada Counties.

In 1888, Edward P. Duplex was elected Mayor, the first black man to be elected mayor of a Western United States City.

Wheatland was the site of the bloody Wheatland Hop Riot of 1913. The Wheatland Hop Riot, an important and highly-publicized event in California labor history, was the second major labor dispute in the United States supposedly initiated by the Industrial Workers of the World, brought about by the difficult conditions farm laborers at the ranch endured. The riot resulted in four deaths and many injuries. It focused public opinion for the first time on the plight of California's agricultural laborers, and resulted in new state legislation to regulate labor camp conditions.
