Yuba County / Lakes
Collins Lake is a Northern California fishing destination about an hour
north of Sacramento with about 12 miles of shoreline nestled in the
foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. The lake is stocked Spring & Fall with
Rainbow Trout in addition to naturally propagating Brown Trout, Small Mouth
& Largemouth Bass, Catfish , Crappie, Reddear & other panfish.
The lake reaches 133ft deep with a full surface elevation of 1183ft.
Trolling in the top 35ft, or casting PowerBait or worms along the shore are
good bets for trout depending on the time of year. 5+ pound fish are not
entirely uncommon and in the spring and again in fall we typically see 7+
It’s a great lake for canoes, kayaks and float tubes, which seem to be
in-vogue with folks looking for a peaceful escape from the valley grind.
Skiing & wakeboarding is permitted during the summer months however jet
skies & similar small personal watercraft and noisy boats are not permitted.
The family run campground is open all year round (the office & gate are
open every day except Christmas day). It’s a clean and well kept area
along the western shoreline; When the lake is full you can practically fish
right out of the lakefront campsites. RV Hookups are available as well as
non-hookup trailer & tent camping. If you don't want to drag a trailer up
the hill they also offer rental trailers and cabins. You can reserve a
campsite or cabin online (collinslake.com) or by phone (530) 692-1600 a
year in advance.
The general store has some basics, including gas, propane, tackle, worms,
frozen bait, drinks, snacks & memorabilia, as well as espresso and the giant
ice cream cones, for which Collins Lake is well known.
Late spring until after labor day the weekends can be very busy. It’s
almost always more peaceful on a weekday or before school lets out or after
mid-August. If you're not camping there are barbecues and picnic tables near
the beach for day-use. Rental boats are available just south of the beach
and include small aluminum fishing boats, 2-story patio boats, paddleboards
& kayaks, and soon a few smaller open platform pontoon boats for fishing
with the family.
